RESERVE GRADE
The past two weeks saw the Reggie’s take on the two top teams in the comp, with promising signs. After a narrow loss to valleys the boars put it to the top of the table Highfields eagles.
The boars started slowly after they allowed the eagles to open the scoring, catching them short out wide. But once they held onto the ball they were able to make their way down the field and ben bland caught the markers out and scored under the posts.
The boars then dominated the first half with possession, constantly forcing Highfields into making mistakes. The forwards controlled the middle of the field with Tom Andersen leading the way, making big metres every time he ran the ball. Tom Fitzgerald put Brad Frost through a gap and scored out wide and within a few minutes brad frost and his second try with the exact same play. Goondiwindi took a 16 to 6 lead into half time.
The Reggie’s continued their dominance into the second half, easily making their way down the field and Tom Fitzgerald carried defenders over the line to extend the lead. It looked like the boars were going to run away with game but the game took a turn with a late fight back from the eagles.
The momentum swung into Highfields favour and they had the boars on the back foot, the eagles put on a few try’s and they were back in the game. Goondiwindi struggled to get out of their own end and constant errors giving away possession, the eagles scored again and the scores were level.
The boars defence held strong for the remainder of the game and one last play after the siren almost resulted in a try to the boars. The match ended in a 22 all draw.
A grade
The boars face a tough month, with games against some of top teams in the competion. The boars have shown that they can match it with the best teams for the majority of the match, with only small patches costing them.
Highfields broke the deadlock with a try, but not long after a cross field kick saw Stewart Lowe jump above the pack to score in the corner and the scores were level.
The eagles clicked into gear and were rolling, they were making breaks easily and within a few minutes piled on a couple of try’s and looked like running away with the game in the first 20 minutes.
The boars clawed their way back into the match with some stiff defence and were able to stop the score line from blowing out. With the game in the balance, Tyrell McCullagh provided a spark when he took on the line and produced another brilliant individual try. With halftime approaching, Highfields scored again to take a 22 to 10 lead into the sheds.
The second half was the boars turn to step up a gear and within the opening set saw Tom Halford break the line and score. The boars were now within 6 points and had all the momentum. With a large vocal crowd behind them, they were pressing and had Highfields defending their own line for large periods of time.
With all their possession and field position the boars could not find their way to the try line as the eagles defence held up. The boars created an overlap and spread the ball out wide and looked like scoring but the Highfields defender read the pass and took the intercept to go the length of the field and score. Another length of the field try on the stroke of full time saw Highfields run out winners 32 to 16.
