round 1 boars vs wattles

A Grade
The boars got to find out where they stand in 2018 as they travelled to Clifton on Saturday to take on the heavily backed favourite for the premiership, the wattles warriors. With some key players still unavailable for round 1, Under 18’s players Tom Davis and Josh Koeller stepped and made their A grade debut’s and did not look out of place.
Wattles were first to strike with a try in the corner after an error from the boars coming out their own end. But once Goondiwindi got some possession they were able to easily make their way down the field and Carl Clement crossed beside the posts to even the score.
The boars defence was excellent with their line speed and pressure shutting down wattles every time. An absolute bell ringer of a tackle by Tom Halford forced an error and Goondiwindi was on the attack again.
The boars had wattles stuck on their own try line defending for a period of time but could not convert to points. The Duggan boys combined from their own end to go the length of the field to score just before half time against the run of play.
The boars came out firing the second half and had wattles on the back foot again. Joel Currie took control directing traffic and put tom Fitzgerald through a gap who found Josh Keoller in support to score.
Wattles then responded with two quick tries from mistakes from the boars coming out their own end.
Momentum swung back the boar’s way and had wattles defending for multiple sets, which resulted in a wattles player being put in the bin. Some excellent running from Nail Dunnigton-Wallace and Marty Burkhardt got the boars going and Matt Gardner went through the line and set up Tom Davis down the sideline to be tackled short of the line. Levi Wilson who had an outstanding game was rewarded with a try to close the score line.
The boars still pressed all the way to the to the final siren but went down 26 to 16.

Reserve grade
The Reggie’s started off poorly with an error riddled first half allowing wattles to put on three quick tries. Once the boars maintained some possession they were able to get some field position and Tom Carter crossed in the corner.
With a bit of possession to start the second half the boars looked good and closed the gap to two points as Jamie O’keefe scored in the corner. Matt Galvin found some space out of dummy half and found Jack Laidlaw in support who carried several defenders to score.
But once a Goondiwindi player was put in the bin it stretched the defence and wattles were able to run a few tries and blow out the score line

Under 18’s
After two good trials, the Goondiwindi Boars Under 18’s came into Round One full of confidence. They started slow with a lot of drop ball in the first 15 minutes. Once the young boars ball control picked up, they ran in 30 unanswered points before half time. The second half played out much the same as the first with the boy’s ball control being a little scratchy to start, but once they held, they ran in a number of tries. To Wattle’s credit, they never stopped trying and were rewarded with a try late in the game. This was a one sided affair and our boys took the opportunity to build our for and against. It was a great effort by all that ran out for the boars, to come out 54-6 winners.
